The McDonalds Experience

3/28/2011

Growing up in Port Huron in the 1960-70’s if you wanted McDonald’s for dinner you had to travel to the other side of town to the only McDonald’s. Now there are at least 3. The good news was you could have a regular hamburger, small fry and small drink with change back from you dollar! Who could eat more than that at one sitting anyway?

Now I don’t visit McDonald’s as much as I used to but when I go I want that Mac Donald’s experience. In other words when I am done I want to feel like I had Mc Donald’s food.  I don’t want an Angus Chipotle BBQ Bacon Burger or a Big N’Nasty, or a Premium Crispy Chicken Club and I do not want a wrap. No wraps, wrap it up I’ll eat it later. Those things are ok but…

No I want a Big Mac or a regular hamburger with extra pickles or a filet-o-fish or maybe some Chicken Nuggets with Hot Mustard. No I do not want a double filet-O-Fish nor do I want Chicken Selects. I do want fries with that, hot fries and ketchup. I personally like their ice tea, not sweet tea just regular ice tea with more ice than tea.

My question is how do they make a Big Mac/hamburger that tastes the same as it did 40 years ago and you can buy that same taste all over the world?

My second question is what’s for lunch?

Kindle - it's burning me!

3/24/2011

I love using my Amazon Kindle book reader. It is very easy to use and it seems to work the way I think it should, so that is a plus. I can download books from Amazon over our wireless network.  I can upload text files from my computer. Encyclopedia articles, books of the Bible, Project Gutenberg ebooks, scanned textbooks and let the text-to-speech read them to me.

Right now, this second, I have 73 books/articles waiting for me. 4 of those I have completed. Another 4 I have read more than half way. Now do you know how much I have spent so have on Kindle content? $5.99.   Normally I try to read 30-40 books a year. I may set a new record this year and that would be in part due to the Kindle.

But here is the problem: the titles I would pay money for are either too expensive or have the text-to-speech turned off. For example:

The Most Human Human: What Talking with Computers Teaches Us About What It Means to Be Alive 13.99 and no text-to-speech.

Moonwalking with Einstein: The Art and Science of Remembering Everything 12.99 that’s more than 9.99.

Quantum: Einstein, Bohr, and the Great Debate about the Nature of Reality 9.78 – No text-to-speech.

Those titles are not for everyone. They will be in the bargain bin soon. I can wait. Or I can get the titles through the library for free.

Authors if you want to take my money then give me a Kindle title at a good price with text-to-speech and I will buy your product. If the Kindle title cost the same as the paper and there is no text-to-speech you might as well buy the paper and then you will have something to burn if you get cold.

Commucations?

The new phones are still not setup correctly. They are the second generation of the blackberry phones we have had for the past two years. By second generation they must mean cheaper. They are just different enough in size that we cannot used our old cases. Blackberry has their own IM system so I tried to send Tina a message. That did not seem to work. I tried an IM on Yahoo but no go. Later, Tina had responded to my blackberry IM but it was set up not to make any noise for incoming messages so that was helpful. Smart. Then she tried Yahoo IM which works sometimes but very slow. So I called her office. Ok, I tried to call her office the call got dropped three times before I stopped trying.

My parents had one phone in the kitchen. It had a wire but we never lost that phone. We never dropped outside (Sarah & Stephanie). We never washed it in the washing machine (Katie. Never took it into a hot tub (Sarah). We never dropped into a cup holder half filled with liquid (Katie). That phone rang loud and clear. That Phone worked 99.89% of the time for 30 years without replacement or repair. My parents sometimes complained about the $10.00 a month bill and they were very careful about calling long distance. But every work day mom and dad communicated on that device without problems or phone stress.

I can’t wait for Tina to get home so we can communicate!

New Smart Phones?

3/19/2011

Last Thursday night I did something I don’t like to do, I entered the Verizon Store on Miller Road in Flint Township. This place always costs me money. There is always a long line and lots of people. There are too many phones that seem to do the same thing. I always fear I will get that salesperson that does not have a clue. Did not want to go but had to have a phone that works.

Good news, there was a parking spot! They had remodeled the store so the flow was better. The salesperson was nice and seemed like he knew what he was doing. We had been paying for the “plan” so he ordered us two new Blackberry 2 phones and said they would arrive at our house on Friday, no cost. They did! It was just a little too easy. There were two different boxes one for each phone with the phone number on the box.

I opened the one with my phone number, looked at the parts and the directions and said no, not right now. Saturday afternoon Tim asks me “Are you going to use your new phone?” I said no- too many steps and then we will have to do it again when Tina gets home with her phone. Tim said that he would do it.

Ok. 2-3 hours later, 70 minutes on the phone with tech support it seems to be working. Whoever shipped the phones put the one with Tina's number in my box and maybe visa versa? Tina you might want to clear your schedule when you want to get yours working. Smart Phones!

Smart Phones - Right!

3/15/2011

I have been having problems with my Blackberry cell phone. I would put it on the charger at night and when I got up it was dead. I ordered another battery and it worked for another week or two. Then the same problem. Ordered another battery, put it on the charger - it looked good. But it was dead my morning.
Now the phone is just over two years old so they would love to sell me a new phone. Maybe this is a smart phone it know just when to die so I can spend more money and spend more time reentering data.
If it was really smart it would fix itself or order at new phone with the current addresses, numbers, pictures and other data.

Clean Start

3/11/2011

I spent the last few days rearranging things at the house and the church. It was a great deal of work. I am always looking for that best use of space and to me more efficient in my work. The heavy stuff is done. Now all I have to do is clean up the mess and then clean under it! Can I call this spring cleaning or is this winter cleaning I just put off?

25 years ago today at around 1:30 pm I had to stop watching the tennis match and go get married. What I find strange is when I think back and remembering the events of the day some are crystal clear and others I dont remember at all.
As I look at the pictures...that person was at our wedding. I do not remember him being there. Or even better who is that person?
But I do remember a most beautiful girl who took my hand and said "I Do" and that was what was most important.

Thanks Tina for the past 26

The last few days, being finished with Philosophy class, I have been working on my website and loading software on my new desktop emachine. Loading Microsoft office, Encyclopedia Britannica and my Biblesoft PC Study Bible.
I have been trying out Microsoft OneNote to help with an anaylsis of Homers Illiad. Today I will try similar stuff with Hosea.
I have setup Memo to Me to remind me to do these Blog posts.
Because I have now registered the domain www.georgerichards.net I find that weebly is using Google Apps for email and other things I still have to learn about. At least there is no tech -no-stress in my life!

So much to learn, so little time.
For with much wisdom
comes much sorrow.
The more knowledge
the more grief.
