The day after thanksgiving

11/23/2012

When I was a kids, some 40 years ago, in Port Huron,
the day after Thanksgiving was the day dad would build the ice rink. He would
make a large ring with some metal, cover it with plastic, fill with water and a
day or two later in was ready. Some years it would last into April. Then the
neighbors would open there pool and into the 45 degree water we would go!

Book or ebook that is the question

11/6/2012

OK. I like books I always have and always will but to answer the question book vs ebook I say YES. Maybe the question should be why do you read?
 1) I read for information, to learn something new, to learn from someone else's mistakes or successes.
 2) I read to change my way of thinking.
 3) I read less often for entertainment.

It has been awhile since I counted but I own some 6000+ books.
No. I have not read them all my goal is 50 a year cover to cover. You can check out my past read list on this site if you like.

But I have no less than 4,217 files in my etext subdirectory on my computer and several hundred more on my kindle.

Book trapped in bookcutting vise. No books were harmed for this picture. The bandsaw works well too!
This might just kill some of you 'bookies' but my class last term was Christian Counseling and came with one book over 900 pages. I did not have time to read 900 pages in 6 weeks so I cut the book apart and paid a kid to scan it into the computer where I could use Textaloud to read it to me while I exercised or I could email it to Kindle and had it read it to me while I did other things.

My current class came with two books, both were also available on Kindle so I spent another $18.00 to have both ebook and paper book.

A few years back we were going on a long trip so I gathered information on the states/cities/history that we were traveling through. Then ran the text through textaloud and saved the mp3's to cd's and listen to them in the car. Worked well.

Tina made this Kindle & iphone holder so I could get other work done while listening. Dishes, laundry, dusting...

I use a music stand to hold big tabletop books for easy reading
I also use the local public Library. In Michigan most of them are connected through MEL.org so they have 1000's of books that can be ordered online and picked up at your local library. Most are also loaning Kindle ebooks now too.

Looking for free ebooks check out my links page.
www.kindlebuffet.com seems to have at least 10 NEW free books a week!!

Also anything you can up into MSWord can be emailed to your [email protected] account for free.

Book or ebook - I say YES - read, learn, love.

I can't believe that it has been so many days since my last post.
A geat deal has happen.
We have been cleaning and painting around the church.
Tina had to work in Bay City so I got to spend the day there.
Tina's Birthday.
We spent two night at the camper.
It has been hot and dry.
Vera Steven passed into Jesus Hands.
We saw her in her last day in the nursing home.
Then the funeral.
Time with friends.
Sarah is home - for the funeral and then for a week.

New Book Shelf

Built a new book shelf today. I make them out of 2x8x8 so they will not sag no matter how many pounds of books you place on them.
Thanks to Stephanie for doing the staining.

Cleaning Up?

6/7/2012

Well spent a good amount of the last few days cleaning around here and the church. It seems messed up - I feel we did spring cleaning in the nice warm weather of January in Michigan so we were head of the game. But the dirt seems to have caught up and now we have doing a late spring cleaning or is this summer cleaning?
It is the war that never ends.

To Twitter or Not To Twitter

6/1/2012

Picture
Or maybe it is to tweet or not to tweet? Anyway. That was the question. I have had a twitter account for some time just did not know of anyone else using it? Then today I saw a FB post from Sarah that stated you could follow Well Spring (group 3) on twitter – so now I do. I think?

Still not sure how to hook my website to all this Social Media
but I am willing to learn. I need Twitter for dummies!

Today Stephanie and Tim suprised me and took me to Five Guys Burgers and Fries in Grand Blanc for lunch. Stephanie saw that it was on my bucket list so she decided that we should complete this experence.
Basically you pick a burger and then choose from 15 different toppings. There fries, cooked in peanut oil are very good. Nice overall experience. www.fiveguys.com
