Christ vs. Law - Faith vs. Works

4/12/2012

This year we have been preaching through Paul's letters (Epistles) to the churches. We see that there are basically three kinds - letters to churches he did not start like Romans, letters to churches he did start but have gone away from his teaching such as Corinthians and letters to the churches he did start but are doing well like Philippians.
Paul is always doing a balancing act between the Gospel of Chirst and the Law (The Law of the Jews, civil law, moral law, law written on ones heart). If you live by the Law then Christ's work on the cross was not enough. If you live by faith in Christ then you will want to keep the law.

Here is the questions????
1) Those of us who live by faith in Jesus Christ do we have to keep the law?

2) Those who live by the law (I try to be a "good person") apart from Jesus Christ, what happens when they die?

3) What laws (civil, moral, church) have you seen changed or forgotten or done away with, over your lifetime.?

1- The "law" we are to keep is to love the Lord with all our heart and soul and strength and mind, and love our neighbor as ourself. Another one is to be holy as He is holy.

2- The law won't save us - only being in a right relationship with God is what matters.

3- One that comes to mind is observing the Sabbath. Most stores no longer close on Sunday. Years ago most stores closed on Good Friday from noon until 3 pm.

Great questions.
1) Have to is such a strong word... if we feel we have to follow the law and meet that requirement we negate what Christ did on the cross. It becomes what we do instead of what Christ did for us. Our love for Him should cause us to want to do what He has called us to do.
2) Only God knows a person's heart. If they are intentionally choosing to live apart from Christ, then I don't believe they would not go to heaven. On the otherhand, if a person is following the law based on the fact that God wrote His law on our hearts and that's all the person knew, then I would say that God will determine that and they would probably go to heaven. I'm glad I don't have to decide this.
3) I recall my grandma telling me about all the things she couldn't do. Man made laws meant to help people keep themselves morally right. No movies, no jewelry, no playing cards, no dancing, etc. I also remember Sunday being more protected and many stores not even open. Not the case anymore. Can't think of others at the moment.

1) We are now under the New Covenant which Jesus gave His life for. He fulfilled the Law...but now it is about loving and living like Jesus did. It is a matter of our heart being in a right relationship with God and like Evadeen said, loving God with all our heart, soul, mind and strength and loving others as ourselves.

2) If they have not in some time and place accepted Jesus as their Lord and Savior..then they are doomed to hell. Thankfully, God is the judge of that.

3) I think of "moral" law in one case being that fact that so many swear words are now allowed on radio and TV. There used to be restrictions on what could be shown and said in the media, but it is getting more and more uncensored every day it seems.
