HSBC New Testament SL

Picture
Here is a picture of the New Testament part of the 22 foot, 6000 year timeline. 1 inch equals 25 years. One observation that is
apparent right away is the amount of time covered in the Old Testament is huge compared to the amount of time covered in the New Testament. As we entered our time of studying the New Testament after not really looking at it much over the
past two years I think there was a feeling of general relief, of coming home, of getting back to the familiar.  But as we progress our newly studied Old Testament knowledge should provide more depth to our New Testament studies.

As we mentally make the transition from being an Israelite to  being a Christian we, hopefully have a little better idea of what the first Christians had to go through. Paul, for example, going from being an extreme Jew and having his whole life changed to become a follower of Christ.

This year we get to have Christmas with the Gospels, last year we adjusted the schedule a little to have Christmas with Isaiah, the year before was Christmas with Exodus, a bit of a challenge. But God continued to bless His people.

Can you state a way in which our Old Testament study brought a new light to a the New Testament idea or thought?

I think that this was a great idea, I don't know another church that has preached through the Bible. Let alone have an entire wall timeline! It's been great to start with the Old Testament that brings a path of knowledge to the New Testament study.

When I first began to study the Bible I was under the common thought that it is two seperate books, the old and the new. And somehow the New wipped out the Old.
After going through the Old Testament, thoughouly, I came to a new understanding. It is not two seperate books put together, but one book. The O.T. is the promise and the N.T. is the fullfillment of that promise.

Making the connections between the O. T. and the N. T. have been enlightning as we studied. My father often said how God was the same yesterday, today and tomorrow. He (God) was God Almighty back in the days of the patriarchs and He kept His promises to them - just as He did for Mary and Joseph in the N.T. God was the Provider (Jehovah-jireh) for Moses and so many others in the O. T. Jesus, God's Son, provided for the needs of so many in the N. T. (healing, food, protection, etc.) I know He will provide for me, be my Promise Keeper and my God Almighty, too.

Many Christians tend to not want to study the OT as they feel most of what is written isn't relevant to todays world. To understand the history and culture of the OT is to put the icing on the study of the NT. I don't feel you can truly understand the New Testament without understanding the Old.

Gaining a better understanding of customs in OT times enhances our understanding of the culture in the New Testament times. Also learning about the surrounding cultures and peoples that interacted and sometimes overtook God's people. I've enjoyed learning more about a portion of the Bible I used to not pay much attention to. Thanks
